  "summary": "Total Value Locked (TVL) in DeFi grew from under ~$1B at the start of 2020 to a first all-time high of ~$177.5B on 2021-11-09 (DefiLlama 'headline' DeFi TVL, which excludes liquid-staking, double-counted assets, and certain RWA to avoid double counting). The 2022 bear market (Terra/UST collapse May 2022, 3AC, FTX Nov 2022) crushed headline TVL to ~$38B by year-end 2022. Recovery followed: ~$53B EOY 2023, ~$116B EOY 2024, with the 2025 cycle re-peaking at ~$171B on 2025-10-07 (just below the 2021 ATH). A sharp correction into 2026 brought headline DeFi TVL down to ~$74.5B by 2026-06-16. The category MIX shifted dramatically: in 2020-2021 DEXes, lending and CDP/MakerDAO dominated; from 2023 onward LIQUID STAKING (Lido-led) became the single largest application category, with its broad TVL hitting a record ~$86B on 2025-08-14 (>50% of the broad total-DeFi TVL of ~$164B at the time). RESTAKING (EigenLayer) exploded from ~0 in early 2024 to a ~$20-22B peak (mid-2024 and again Aug 2025) then collapsed to ~$5B by mid-2026. RWA and stablecoin-yield (Ethena) emerged as major 2024-2026 categories. NOTE on methodology: DefiLlama reports two different aggregates. (a) The 'headline' DeFi TVL series (api.llama.fi/v2/historicalChainTvl) EXCLUDES liquid staking, double-counted and RWA to avoid double counting. (b) The per-category sums from api.llama.fi/protocols are GROSS and include liquid staking, bridges (e.g. WBTC), basis trading and RWA, so they sum far higher (~$246B currently). Category time-series below are reconstructed from the historical TVL of the dominant (leader) protocols in each category via api.llama.fi/protocol/{slug}; they are therefore LOWER BOUNDS / proxies for full category totals, not the full category aggregate.
